Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1 and the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager each feature 24 betting interests, and with slightly more than five months remaining until the “Run for the Roses,” even horses as accomplished as Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Essential Quality figure to offer odds of 10-1 or higher.

Typically the minimum bet on a TRIFECTA is $1. Since picking the order of three horses is a little harder, many people opt to make a TRIFECTA BOX bet, which means you pick three horses and if they finish in the top three, in any order, you win. This bet costs $6. You can bet this in any order since it doesn’t matter where they finish. Betting on the Kentucky Derby. Looking for tips to betting on the Kentucky Derby, are ya? Not sure who to bet this weekend? Here are four choices worth considering across both future wager pools:
  • Betting on the Kentucky Derby. Looking for tips to betting on the Kentucky Derby, are ya? Psst Come right this way. Oh, that’s right. Although sports betting is still illegal in some states, betting on horse races is legal almost everywhere. You can even bet on Kentucky Derby 2020 online in most states. In 2018, the race drew in well over.
  • In 55 previous editions, only Smarty Jones in 2004 made it to the Kentucky Derby winner’s circle. However, quite a few good horses have won the Southwest, some making the gate in Louisville on the first Saturday in May and some going on to exceptional racing careers.
#4 Fire At Will (30-1): Although Fire At Will is best known for his resounding victory against international competition in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), he’s also shown promise on dirt, winning Saratoga’s With Anticipation S. over a sloppy track. As a son of Declaration of War out of a Kitten’s Joy mare, Fire At Will has a ton of stamina in his pedigree, so classic distances shouldn’t be an issue. If he returns to dirt on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, watch out. This Mike Maker trainee might be something special.

#11 Life Is Good (15-1): Conditioned by six-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert, Life Is Good made a fantastic impression in his debut at Del Mar last Sunday. Favored at 1-5 in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden sprint, the son of leading sire Into Mischief dashed to the front through fast fractions, then widened effortlessly under jockey Mike Smith to score by 9 1/2 lengths. Granted, 15-1 is a pretty short price to accept five months before the Derby. But the sky is the limit for this $525,000 yearling purchase, who could very well develop into Baffert’s next sophomore star.

#20 Speaker’s Corner (50-1): After finishing third in his debut sprinting 6 furlongs at Saratoga, Speaker’s Corner stretched out over 7 furlongs at Belmont Park and delivered a sharp performance. Rallying hard from behind a fast pace, Speaker’s Corner got up to win by three-quarters of a length over fellow Kentucky Derby Future Wager contender Caddo River. A son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense out of a mare by 2006 Preakness (G1) winner Bernardini, Speaker’s Corner is bred to relish classic distances and looks like an improving prospect for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

#5 Constitution (20-1): Winner of the 2014 Florida Derby (G1), Constitution is off to a sensational start at stud. His first crop of foals produced 2020 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Tiz the Law, and while a standout has yet to emerge from his second crop, I expect a few promising prospects to emerge during the winter. Coronation Futurity winner Stephen and impressive debut winner Never Surprised are just two of the possibilities.

Good luck!

Jackie's Warrior might have been the 4-5 favorite when the gates opened for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but he already had been overtaken as the early 2021 Kentucky Derby favorite before stepping on Keeneland's track.

The Champagne (G1) winner opened at 15-1 at William Hill's Sportsbook and held steady at that number leading up to Juvenile. Essential Quality opened at 20-1, but smart money ahead of the Juvenile cut his odds to 12-1.

Since his Juvenile victory, Essential Quality has dropped to 10-1, with the Derby six months away. Jackie's Warrior remains the second choice after his fourth-place finish, but his odds have drifted to 40-1 as distance concerns begin to creep in.

Chad Brown's Highly Motivated was among the biggest movers of the week. He captured the Nyquist Stakes on the Breeders' Cup undercard in impressive fashion and now has won two races in a row. His odds dropped to 45-1 from 125-1.

Doug O'Neill's Hot Rod Charlie almost pulled off a massive upset while running second in the Juvenile at 94-1. His Derby odds have dropped to 50-1 from 140-1 since that effort.

Essential Quality is the deserving leader in the clubhouse, but with only 12 horses listed under 100-1, this might be the time to take a swing with a lightly raced long shot that has upside.
